Using Proportions to Solve Impossible Heights
This hands-on activity has students calculate the measurements of different objects that have heights that are impossible to measure. In order to this this, the students have to first measure their height and the height of their shadow and set it up as a ratio. In order to find the height of the objects that are not measurable, they will measure their shadows and set up a proportion to get the actual height. This activity is an engaging way for students to discover how proportions work using real life examples.
